(Pathways to Resilience─Connecting Urban and Rural Communities for a Resilient Future
The 15th International Permaculture Convergence (IPC 15, https://www.ipctaiwan2024.org/) recently concluded successfully. This year’s event was organised by Taiwan’s Earth Passengers Environmental Workshop (Earth Passengers). They had successfully secured the hosting rights back in 2018, but due to the global pandemic, it was postponed for two years. Over these six years, we have experienced an unprecedented pandemic as well as countless natural and man-made disasters.
The conference adopted the theme "Pathways to Resilience—Connecting Urban and Rural Communities for a Resilient Future", exploring how people around the world use permaculture principles to address challenges in adversity and foster greater resilience within individuals and communities.
The term "Resilience" describes the ability to maintain flexibility and recover in the face of adversity. This ability can be enhanced through the design of external environments and systems. Global warming has led to more frequent extreme weather events, and with recent armed conflicts, food security and living environments have become everyday challenges in many regions. Therefore, improving resilience is a critical issue for both the present and the future.
IPC 15 was divided into two main parts: a two-day conference and a five-day convergence. Earth Passengers organised these events separately in Kaohsiung and theTaromak Village in Taitung. Additionally, a series of training courses were held at the Earth Passengers Permaculture Learning Center in Taitung.
The conference attracted over 300 participants from 30 regions worldwide. The two-day agenda included keynote speeches, panel forums, poster exhibitions arranged by participants, informal networking during meal times, breakout discussions, and feedback sessions. The organisers meticulously planned the event to ensure participants had ample opportunities to connect with permaculture practitioners from around the globe. This also provided international attendees a chance to experience Taiwan's unique culture and landscapes.
The two keynote speakers at the conference were David Holmgren, co-originator of the Permaculture, and Satish Kumar, a world-renowned author, social activist, peace pilgrim, and co-founder of Schumacher College, an ecological education institution. They explored pathways to resilience from different perspectives, with Holmgren focusing on food production and Kumar on spiritual well-being.
Additionally, the panel forums featured permaculture practitioners from various regions who shared their projects and initiatives. Notably, a speaker from Ukraine discussed applying permaculture principles in a time of war to support internally displaced persons.
